You may recognize Janelle Monáe because of her stylish up-do. Her music, like her hair, is nostalgia for a bygone era. From the very beginning of Electric Lady there's an orchestral overture that sounds straight out of a 1970's pulp film, which I'm in love with. Miss Monáe is not afraid of indulging in the extravagant, in order to hook us into a complete album experience that is as entertaining and involving as any film can be. Electric Lady has all of the quirks of 70's/80's music, but all of the sheen of the 21st century.
