The best album ever made is not Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club nor Dark Side of the Moon, it's Since I Left You by The Avalanches. If you haven't heard it yet, then you should. It's a musical journey to paradise and back again.
After more than a decade The Avalanches' Since I Left You album still stands as one of the greatest musical achievements in recent history. The Australian duo used over 3,500 samples from music and film in order to create the most extensive audible mosaic of the past century. The strange but wonderful thing about this album is that the sound feels original. It was conceived with the reverential love of the old and aspirations to create an entirely new sound altogether. This album is indicative that sound is not limited to its original form. Sound can be manipulated and transformed into something fresh and beautiful. The Avalanches are well before their time because it's only now that remixing, reediting, mashing up, and sampling are becoming a higher form of art. Sure, we have the Daft Punks of the world who wish to return dance music to the days of live instrumentation, but then we have The Avalanches who managed to find a vibrant soul in a typically soulless soundscape.
